Pink Slime. It’s the buzzword for anyone who has ever bought ground beef at the supermarket. After an investigative news story on this byproduct that is added to the meat served in schools and sold in grocery stores, suddenly America was in an uproar over this heretofore unknown additive substance in beef.
In response many supermarket chains have decided to stop selling any ground beef that comes with this notorious slime of the rose-colored hue. While I’m sure the list of stores banning pink slime in their meat will continue to grow, at this time the following stores have declared publicly a change in their beef-buying practices:
- Giant Foods (where I do a lot of my shopping)
- Stop & Shop
Now one supermarket has upped the ante.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 28th is free pink slime swap meat day at Fresh & Easy locations. According to the store, anyone concerned about the quality of their meat can bring any fresh or frozen ground beef from another retailer to any Fresh & Easy, and exchange it for a package of fresh&easy (80/20) ground beef – no questions asked. Fresh & Easy says its meat never had and never will have pink slime in it. Each person may exchange up to two pounds of ground meat, while supplies last.
While this is a great promotion, not every American will be able to participate. That’s because Fresh & Easy has market locations in Arizona, California, and Nevada only. Bummer for those of us living elsewhere!
