Yesterday’s post offered ways to change how your drive, maintain your car, or even use your car in order to save money. That post also offered a tease that stores were rolling out programs to help consumers save money at the pump.
Today, I’m highlighting 7 of those stores where you can see some real savings on gas. Many of these tips are courtesy of Andrea Woroch, a nationally recognized consumer and money-saving expert who has guest posted before for me. If you’d like, you can follow Andrea on Twitter for daily savings advice and tips.
Now, here are those 7 stores that can help you save on your gas spending.
Walmart is easing the pain at the pump with the return of its Great Gas Rollback program, helping customers save on their fuel purchases in three different ways. Walmart customers using a Walmart gift card will receive a 10 cent per gallon discount, and customers who use a Walmart MoneyCard or Walmart credit card will save 15 cents per gallon on their fuel purchase. The Great Gas Rollback began on August 31st and goes through December 24th. Gas will be discounted at more than 1,000 Murphy USA and Walmart gas stations located at Walmart Supercenters in participating states.
From time to time pharmacy store CVS will offer a gas promotion program. That is, it will have designated certain products in the store so that when you buy them and spend a pre-determined amount, you will earn a $10 gas card for free. In most instances you need to spend $25 or $30 in order to get the free gas card. If those are products you would be buying anyway–and you have coupons or CVS Extra Bucks to cash in to save even more–that’s a win-win all around.
Shop at Safeway with your club card and earn one point per dollar spent on groceries and pharmacy purchases. When you buy gift cards you’ll earn four points per dollar (excluding Visa, MasterCard and other credit company cards). Each month you can earn up to $2 off per gallon (2,000 points), but any points totaling less than 100 will expire at the end of the month.
- King Soopers
In addition to saving three cents per gallon at King Soopers fuel stations, you can also save at select Shell and Loaf ‘n Jug locations when you use your King Soopers or City Market card. Earn 10 cents off per gallon when you buy $100 worth of groceries in a month.
Kroger is extending its summer fuel savings program through Dec. 31. Similar to King Soopers, you’ll save money at both Kroger fuel stations and select Shell stations with your Kroger Plus card. Rewards can be used toward the purchase of up to 35 gallons per car, per transaction. For every dollar spent on groceries you earn 1 point, and every non-federally funded prescription earns 50 points. Gift card purchases earn double points, so a $25 gift card will yield 50 points.
- BJs, Costco and Sam’s Club
Warehouse gas stations offer fuel to their members at an average of five to 10 cents less per gallon compared to surrounding gas stations. If you’re already a member of BJs, Costco or Sam’s Club, it’s a no-brainer to save money on gas by filling up during one of your shopping trips. Otherwise, evaluate the cost of the club membership against the potential savings in gas before you sign up.
- Giant Supermarkets
Giant Bonus Card holders can earn money towards gas savings just by swiping their card every time they buy groceries. According to the Giant, you’ll earn $.10 off per gallon when you earn 100 points, $.20 off per gallon when you earn 200 points, $.30 off per gallon when you earn 300 points, and so on. Basically, you earn 1 point for every dollar you spend with your Giant card. Not all Giant locations have gas stations but you can take your bonus points with you so that if you spot a Giant somewhere else, you can scan your card at the pump and enjoy your savings there.
In addition to using your supermarket loyalty card to earn fuel points, you can also earn points when you use select credit cards at the pump. Chase Freedom Visa offers 5-percent cash back from Jan. to March and again from July to Sept. on fuel purchases. I know that throughout the year Discover Card offers a similar promotion, and that’s when I’m careful to use my own Discover card to pay for gas. Check out this Gift Card Granny story for a list of the top gas reward credit cards and be sure to check with your current company for similar benefits.
Also, look for promotions that come with free gas, such as this one I heard about through Eversave, one of my affiliate networks: For $29 you’ll get an Exxon/Mobil gift card worth $20 and 6 months of 24-Hour Roadside Assistance and car maintenance discounts ($140 value) from AutoAdvantage. You must buy this deal by end-of-day on September 7th.
