9 Things to Do When You Visit Maine in the Winter

If you’re planning on visiting Maine in the winter, you may be wondering what fun things there are to do and where to go. Southern Maine towns love to get decked out for the holidays in classic New England styles. For most, dressing up downtown includes a brightly lit Christmas tree in the center of downtown. Here’s where you’ll find Christmas tree lighting ceremonies in December in Maine.

Tuba Christmas is something that happens nationwide each year when you can enjoy the unique sound of hundreds of tubas playing traditional Christmas music. Youโ€™ll never forget it. In 2024, you can enjoy this unique concert experience in Maine in Bangor, Freeport and Kennebunkport.

Maine Christmas Tree Farms

According to the Maine Christmas Tree Association, there are dozens of choose and cut your own Christmas tree farms in York and Cumberland counties in Southern Maine. The association also represents farms and retailers selling Christmas-related items, like natural wreaths and garland.

You probably think of dog sledding as an activity you might pursue in far north places like Alaska or Canada. However, there are places within a few hours’ drive of Portland Maine where you can enjoy a real dog sledding experience.

The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum hosts the Polar Express train ride in Portland, Maine every holiday season. Itโ€™s quickly become an annual tradition for thousands of families. Last year more than 20,000 passengers rode the train.

Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport, Maine

Since the idea of Prelude is to welcome the Christmas and holiday season in general, itโ€™s always some time between Thanksgiving and mid-December. For 2024, Kennebunkport Prelude is December 5-15, 2024. You can expect parades (human and dog), food festivals, crafts to make and much more.

Getting photos with Santa at the mall is a timeless tradition for Mainers with children. Itโ€™s the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season. The closer we get to Christmas, the busier photos with Santa events get. Since our kids are grown, we took our dogs to see Santa instead.

Mainers, like so many Americans, enjoy attending performances of the ballet, The Nutcracker, during the holiday season. Southern Maine, particularly the greater Portland area, offers plenty of opportunities to experience this classic.

When my daughters were little, we always enjoyed having breakfast with Santa. As of this writing, Iโ€™ve found a handful of places hosting breakfast with Santa. They range from Old Port in Portland to Fryeburg, Maine to Kennebunkport.
