When I woke up this morning and checked my email, I was reminded that there are stores with birthday discounts. Yes, today is my birthday. Hello late 50s!

I mean, of course I knew about restaurants that give freebies on your birthday. And trust me, I intend to take advantage of as many of those as I can.

Also, I knew that I could get a free gift from Sephora during my birthday month. So I’ll definitely be taking a trip to a Sephora near me before December is over.

However, I never expected to receive this push notification from Target. It said, “Happy birthday. Get 5% off storewide.”

I also got an email from Target saying the same about a birthday discount. Honestly, I don’t remember getting anything like this for my birthday last year.

Stores with Birthday Discounts

Anyway, today’s experience got me thinking: how many retail stores give birthday discounts?

Like I said I know about birthday freebies, including the one Sephora gives out to members of its Insider Rewards club. I haven’t shopped at Sephora a lot this year, simply because Ulta is closer to me. And, yes, it helps that Ulta is inside Target stores now.

Now I want to check and see if Ulta has a birthday discount or freebie that I should be taking advantage of today or this month.

So, I’ve put together this list of stores with birthday discounts. This includes clothing retailers that give birthday gifts, home-oriented stores with a birthday reward and many more.

Hopefully, you’ll find something in this list that will help you save money or get something for free from a favorite retailer to celebrate your birthday.

Ace Hardware

I’m glad my friend Holly reminded me of the Ace Hardware birthday discount for Ace Rewards members. Otherwise, I would have thrown away the mailing I got from Ace a few weeks ago. It just looked like junk mail.

Boy, was I wrong. Inside was a $5 off discount that I can use at any time during my birthday month.

Unfortunately, I just went to Ace to buy paint for my house, before I noticed the coupon. Now I’ll have to find another reason to shop at Ace Hardware before the Ace Rewards birthday coupon expires. Hey, $5 is $5!

American Eagle and Aerie birthday discount

In order to qualify for a birthday discount at American Eagle and Aerie, you need to sign up for the sister stores’ rewards program. Called Real Rewards, one of the benefits is a shopping discount for your birthday.

How much of a discount you get depends on how many points you’ve earned in the reward program. It starts at a 15% discount on your birthday and can go as high as 25% off on your birthday.

Anthropologie

If you want a 10-15% discount on Anthropologie purchases on your birthday, then you’ll need to sign up for the retailer’s Anthro Rewards program.

Athleta/Banana Republic/Gap/Old Navy birthday bonus

You’ll need to sign up for the rewards program at one of the Gap-owned retailers–Athleta, Banana Republic, Gap or Old Navy–to qualify for a birthday bonus.

And what is that bonus? Here’s what the rewards program terms and conditions says:

“Birthday Gift: As a member, you will be eligible to receive a birthday gift once a year. The birthday gift may be additional bonus points or items we’ve selected at our discretion.”

Aveda birthday reward

You’ll need to visit an Aveda store to pick up your annual birthday reward as long as you’ve registered for an Aveda account online. This year the gift, a $23 value, is free 30 ml. aromatic nourishing composition oil for bath body and scalp, shown here.

Columbia Sportswear

I’m told that when you share your birthday date with Columbia Sportswear, the company will send you a coupon for 20%. You can use this gift at any time during your birthday month.

The Container Store

When I think about The Container Store, I think of a retailer that helps you get organized. Clearly, so does the brand.

Why? Because their rewards program is called the Organized Insider.

Anyway, when you sign up for that program, be sure to include your birthday. Here’s how The Container Store explains this potential birthday perk:

“In celebration of your special day, if you provided your birth date when completing your online profile, you may receive a special discount that can be used once during your birthday month.”

I’ll admit that I don’t like the use of the word “may” because if you’re gonna offer a birthday gift to customers, either do it or don’t do it. Dangling a “you may receive one” just seems cruel.

Finally, when you first sign up for the Organized Insider, you should receive a $10 coupon to use right away.

CVS Extra Care Rewards

You’ll get $3 in Extra Care Bucks on your birthday from CVS, as long as you’re a member of the Extra Care Rewards program. 

DSW birthday discount

DSW rewards you in two ways when you sign up for its VIP Rewards Program. One, you’ll get 30 points added to your account just for sharing your birthday.

And, two, on your actual birthday, you’ll get at least $5 off on an in-store or online purchase. Those who have achieved a higher tier of rewards could get as much as $10 off for their birthday. 

DSW has a great collection of wide width shoes for women.

European Wax Center birthday discount

Earlier this month, I received a Happy Birthday email from European Wax Center. And within that birthday greeting was a discount.

What was it for? $10 off my next product or leg waxing service. It expires at the end of my birthday month.

Macy’s birthday surprise

While Macy’s does offer a free gift on your birthday–they call it a Macy’s birthday surprise–there are a lot of conditions for getting it. Let me outline them.

One, you have to have a Macy’s credit card. Also, only the primary cardholder gets this birthday surprise.

Two, if you haven’t shopped at Macy’s in the past year using that credit card, you won’t qualify.

Three, if you’ve opted out of Macy’s emails, you won’t receive the details of the birthday surprise.

And, finally, four, if you’ve qualified based on all of these conditions, you may still have to visit a Macy’s store in person to collect your birthday surprise. I don’t know what the surprise is–it could be something as simple as a percentage off a purchase. Or it could be a bonafide physical product.

If you know, let me know. Because this seems like a lot of work to get a birthday freebie, don’t you think?

Nike birthday discount

You’ll need to join the Nike Member rewards club in order to get a 10% off discount coupon on your birthday. Keep in mind there are a number of caveats to this discount.

One, you will have had to join the rewards club before your birthday date. Two, the 10% applies to purchases of $100 or more. And three, it appears this birthday coupon or discount is good for online purchases only.

PacSun birthday reward

PacSun will give you, at minimum, $5 off a purchase on your birthday. That reward could go as high as $10, depending how often you shop at PacSun.

Also, during your birthday month, you’ll earn double points in the PacSun rewards program. So, it goes without saying that if you haven’t joined the PacSun rewards program, you won’t get these birthday perks.

Sephora

Sephora Beauty Insider Birthday Freebies

I love stopping into my local Sephora during my birthday month. That’s because Sephora will help you feel pretty on your birthday with free makeup.

You need to physically visit a Sephora location during the two weeks surrounding your birthday to receive this gift–and there’s no purchase necessary. I believe you can get this freebie at Sephora inside JCPenney, too.

Sheetz gas discount

One year I happened to stop at my local Sheetz convenience store to fill up with gas. After scanning my Sheetz Rewards card, I got a message on the pump about a birthday discount I never knew existed.

Sheetz was giving me a five cents per gallon discount to celebrate my birthday. I realize that five cents isn’t life-changing money but I’ll take a discount regardless, would’t you?

Target birthday coupon

As a member of Target Circle rewards program, I know that I’m always earning cash back on the purchases I make at Target. However, I missed this tidbit in the terms and conditions:

“Birthday Gift: Celebrate your big day with 5% off a shopping trip.”

When stores say they give you a birthday gift, I always expect something physical. Maybe you do, too.

However, I’ll take a birthday coupon for five percent off a single shopping trip. Because I have the Target app on my phone, it appears I’ll be able to use this in store (by showing my barcode).

Or, since I’ve “activated” this birthday coupon, five-percent discount, Target will apply it to my next online shopping trip.

Either way, who can complain about getting a birthday coupon from Target? 

Ulta birthday reward

I logged into the Ultamate Rewards program from Ulta today to see what was there for my birthday. Well, there were two benefits.

One, was 2X points on my purchases–I had to activate it on my phone. And, two, a coupon code to save $5 on an order of at least $25. It was good for two days.

Unfortunately, what I wanted to buy–Bumble and Bumble Don’t Blow It Cream–was excluded from the coupon code. Bummer.

Stores that do not have birthday discounts

In researching this article, I came across lots of questions about if certain stores had a birthday coupon or discount or freebie. And after digging, I found out that a few do not offer these discounts anymore.

I mean, maybe they did at one time. But currently, I couldn’t find any information from the retailer itself about these discounts. 

So, to save you the trouble, I’ve listed popular retailers below that you may think have a birthday discount but, as I said, unfortunately do not.

Finish Line

You used to get a $10 off coupon from Finish Line for your birthday. Now I’m told you just get extra rewards points.

Kohl’s

Kohl’s used to give you a discount coupon on your birthday. No more free birthday gifts, though, from Kohl’s. Like Finish Line, now you just get extra rewards points.

Lululemon

People thought that if you had a Lululemon membership, either for the clothing or Lululemon, formerly the Mirror, that you would get a free gift on your birthday. That does not seem to be true based on current membership benefits.

However, a non-birthday benefit worth mentioning? Free hemming on Lululemon clothing.
