If you like to leave your holiday shopping to the last minute, then I’m confident you’re curious about Christmas Eve store hours. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten something at the last minute — be it a present or something I need for the meal we’re making the next day. And I’m so thankful that the stores I need don’t close super early on Christmas Eve.
Christmas Eve Store Hours at Top National Retailers
While Christmas Eve store hours can vary by location, most national retailers have set hours for this busy shopping day. Even so, Christmas Eve store hours can be a bit unpredictable.
Some retailers may stay open later than usual to accommodate last-minute shoppers. On the other hand,others may close earlier than usual to give their employees time to celebrate the holiday with their families.
To help you plan your Christmas Eve shopping trip, I’ve compiled a list of the Christmas Eve store hours for some of the most popular national and regional retailers. Whether you’re looking to buy gifts for your loved ones, stock up on holiday decorations or just grab some last-minute essentials, I hope you’ll find all the information you need to know about when your favorite stores will be open.
In general, Christmas Eve store hours tend to be shorter than regular store hours. This is because many retailers want to allow their employees to spend time with their families on Christmas Eve. As they should.
Additionally, many retailers may experience a decrease in foot traffic on Christmas Eve as shoppers have already completed their holiday shopping. So, there’s no reason to stay open later.
Finally, it is worth noting that winter weather can also impact store hours on Christmas Eve. If there is a snowstorm or other inclement weather, retailers may choose to close early or even close their doors entirely for the day.
Here are the stores that are closed on national holidays, including Christmas.
Walmart Christmas Eve hours
Here’s what I could find about Christmas Eve hours on Walmart. Typically, the store will open at 6 a.m. and then close by 6 p.m.

If you love Target Drive Up as much as I do, I’ve got great news for you. You can still place a Target Drive Up order on Christmas Eve.
However, there is a cut-off time. That is, you’ll need to get that order in on the Target app by 6 p.m. so you can pick it up before Target closes on Christmas Eve.
As far as special Christmas Eve hours at Target, here’s what Target Corporate said for Holiday 2022:
“Most stores close at 8 p.m. local time on Dec. 24 and reopen at their regular time on Dec. 26.”

So, in other words, Target closes early on Christmas Eve. Because during the rest of the year, most Target stores stay open until 9 or 10 p.m. However, Target is closed on Christmas.
Costco Christmas Eve hours
Costco stores usually close at 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Also, Costco is reliably closed on Christmas.
Dollar General Christmas Eve hours
In years gone by, many Dollar General stores closed at 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve. I’ll have to double check if that still holds true for this year.
Walgreens hours on Christmas Eve
Walgreens stores usually stay open until midnight on Christmas Eve. However, given the hiring situation at so many retailers these days, I wouldn’t be surprised if they close earlier than that this Christmas Eve.
Kohls Christmas Eve hours
Here are Kohl’s holiday hours from last year:
- Friday, Dec. 16 – Friday, Dec. 23: 8 a.m. – 12 a.m.
- Christmas Eve, Dec. 24: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- Christmas Day, Dec. 25: CLOSED
I expect they’ll be similar or the same this year.
Home Depot Christmas Eve hours
Home Depot stores usually close at 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Also, The Home Depot is closed on Christmas day.
CVS hours on Christmas Eve
CVS stores usually close at 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
Meijer Christmas Eve hours
I found a post on the Meijer Facebook page that explained their holiday hours. One, Meijer is open until 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Two, all Meijer stores are closed on Christmas Day. And, three, stores reopen at 6 a.m. on December 26.
Best Buy Christmas Eve hours
It was hard for me to track down Best Buy’s hours on Christmas Eve. One site said 6 p.m. Another said 9 p.m.
I did find this disclaimer, though, on the Best Buy site:
“To accommodate your schedule during the holiday rush, many Best Buy stores will be open for extended holiday hours. Some stores may have different hours where required by local ordinances or landlord regulations. Mall-based Best Buy store hours may vary based on mall hours.”

Lowe’s Christmas Eve hours
I have it on good authority that Lowe’s stores close at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
Sam’s Club Christmas Eve hours
Normally, Sam’s Club warehouse locations stay open until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6 p.m. on Sunday. However, during the holiday season, they have extended shopping hours.
I found the following holiday hours on the Sam’s Club website:
- November 22 – December 23: Monday – Sunday, open until 8 PM
- Christmas Eve, Dec. 24: Open until 6 PM
- New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31: Open until 6 PM
TJ Maxx Christmas Eve hours
A few years ago, a TJ Maxx Facebook post said the stores were open until 6 p.m. only on Christmas and then closed on Christmas Day. Considering that the TJX owns the following brands, I would think their holiday hours would be the same, too:
- T.J. Maxx
- Marshalls
- HomeGoods
- Sierra
- Homesense
Starbucks Christmas Eve hours
If you’re looking to shop at a Starbucks inside a Target store, then I would recommend following Target’s Christmas Eve hours. However, I know that there are instances when Starbucks locations open later or close earlier than Target stores do.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve visited Target late in the evening, Jonesing for a cup of coffee, and Starbucks had already closed.
On the other hand, if you’re looking to buy last-minute gifts at a freestanding Starbucks location, here’s what I can tell you: Starbucks recommends you find your nearest Starbucks and then check the hours for that location.
I know that’s not super helpful if you need to know their Christmas Eve hours now. But that’s the best I could do.

Final Thoughts on Christmas Eve Store Hours
While not a store in the traditional sense, you may wonder if the post office is open on Christmas Eve? The answer is yes.
You should get mail delivery at home on Christmas Eve and you should be able to visit the post office to mail your last-minute holiday cards.
The only exception to this rule is if Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday. Then, the post office will be closed on Sunday and Monday, too — Christmas Day. Finally, if the day before Christmas Eve is a Saturday, remember that many U.S.P.S. locations close earlier on Saturday than other days of the week. So, plan accordingly.
