Stores that Offer Price Match or Adjustment

When I think about the meaning of price match, I think about grocery stores. Usually, a supermarket will match a competitor’s pricing so you don’t shop there.

Well, other kinds of retail stores offer price matching, too. This is usually true at many big box stores or national retailers.

So how do you get a price match? Usually, you have to provide evidence of a competing store having the exact item but at a lower price. This evidence could be a printed advertisement, or, you may be able to show a price on your phone.

Price adjustment policies

In addition, some stores have a price adjustment policy. That is, they’ll refund a portion of your purchase (aka make a price adjustment) if the item you bought goes on sale after you bought it. 

There is usually a time limit to how long you have to ask for a price adjustment. It could be as short as seven days or as long as 30 days after purchase.

Also, requesting a price adjustment refund usually means you have to go back to the store in person. However, some stores let you make these requests online.

Finally, keep in mind that when requesting a price adjustment, you’re not handed the difference in cash–unless you paid in cash. Instead, the store will apply whatever refund you’re due to you to your original form of payment, such as a credit card.

How I’ve organized price matching and adjustment info

You’ll find stores listed in alphabetical order below. I’ll let you know what I found out about price matching at each store or if the store offers price adjustments. In a few instances, some retailers will both price match and give you a price adjustment refund after the fact.

In addition, I know that many people are interested in places that will price match Amazon. So I’ve added a section at the bottom of this article with a list of stores that with match or beat Amazon’s prices. That’s very good information to have.

Finally, whenever possible, I’ve included my own experiences with getting a price match or price adjustment. Of course, my experience may be different than yours.

Below is a bulleted list of stores that offer one or both of these policies. Further down is a section devoted to each store’s policies.

Abercrombie price adjustment

The only store that Abercrombie will price match is its own. That is, if you find a price on the A&F online store that’s cheaper than something in store, you’ll get the price match as you make your purchase. Also, this is the only price adjustment you can get in store.

On the other hand, as far as getting a price adjustment for an online purchase:

1. it has to be within 14 days from when you placed the order
2. you have to have paid full price for your item
3. you have to have your order number

Amazon price adjustment

At Amazon, this price adjustment and price matching thing is a little tricky. First, right off the bat, Amazon does not price match. Amazon explains why here:

“We constantly compare Amazon’s prices to our competitors’ prices to make sure that our prices are as low or lower than all relevant competitors. As a result, we don’t offer price matching.”

Now as far as price adjustments, Amazon offers something called the Pre-Order Price Guarantee. That is, if you pre-order an item before it is officially for sale on Amazon, Amazon guarantees that you’ll get the lowest price possible from the day you pre-order to the day it ships.

In addition, on regular orders that Amazon.com sells (not third-party sellers), you have seven days from when your order arrives to ask for a price adjustment.

So, for example, last week I ordered bags for my Miele vacuum cleaner. They arrived on Friday. So I have until next Thursday to watch the price to see if it drops. If it does, I’ll be sure to ask Amazon to refund the difference.

American Eagle price adjustment

I had to dig to find information about the American Eagle price adjustment policy. The website does not refer to adjustments using that term. Instead, this is what it says on the returns page:

“If you are charged more than the posted or advertised price, we will refund the difference.”

Anthropologie price adjustment

The Anthropologie price match is really a price adjustment. So, if you’ve purchased something at full price–and it goes on sale within 14 days of your purchase–the store will honor this price “match” with a refund. More details on the Anthropologie website.

Athleta price adjustment

To get a price adjustment from an in-store purchase, you have to return to an Athleta store with your receipt within 14 days of purchase. For more details, please see the write up about the Old Navy price adjustment policy below, since the stores are both owned by Gap.

Banana Republic price adjustment

To get a price adjustment from an in-store purchase, you have to return to Banana Republic with your receipt within 14 days of purchase. Please see the write up about the Old Navy price adjustment policy below, since the stores are both owned by Gap.

Best Buy price match guarantee

Best Buy both price matches and offers price adjustments. Here’s what I grabbed from the Best Buy website to explain how this all works:

“We’ll match the product prices of key online and local competitors for immediately available new products (excludes clearance, refurbished and open-box items).

Special considerations:

 At the time of sale, we price match all local retail competitors (including their online prices), and we price match products shipped from and sold by these major online retailers: Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com, Dell.com, HP.com and TigerDirect.com.

We match our online and app prices on in-store purchases and our in-store prices on online and app purchases.

If we lower our in-store, online or app price during the return and exchange period, we will match our lower price, upon request.”

Best Buy price adjustment caveats

Best Buy references its “return and exchange period” for requesting a price adjustment. That period is 15-days long. Also, you’re only allowed to request a price adjustment once.

Bloomingdales price adjustment policies

At Bloomingdales, you need to request a price adjustment the same way you made a purchase. And you have 10 days from your purchase date to do it.

So, if you bought something in the store, then you’ll have to go to a Bloomingdale’s location to request your price adjustment.

Similarly, if you bought something on Bloomgindales.com, then you’ll need to make an online request for a price adjustment.

Finally, Bloomingdale’s does not price match the competition.

Costco price adjustment

There are a few things you need to know about price matching and the Costco price adjustment policy. One, Costco does not offer price matching to other retailers. Two, Costco warehouses will not price match Costco.com. Three, if you want a Costco price adjustment, make sure you request it within 30 days of making your purchase.

If you made your purchase online, then you’ll make the price adjustment request online. However, if you bought something at a warehouse, then you’ll need to go to the Customer Service/Returns desk inside the warehouse for that price adjustment. It’s next to the Membership desk area shown below.

Sometimes, Costco will automatically apply a price adjustment to a purchase. This happens when a promotion is happening. So, be sure to check your receipt for any promotional discount before requesting that price adjustment.

Costco Membership Deal

Costco Membership Deal via Groupon

The best deal on a Costco Membership right now is through Groupon. When you sign up, you’ll get your one-year membership plus a $40 Costco Digital Shop Card for free.

In case you didn’t know, the Costco Shop Card is the store’s gift card. You can use it in store or online.

This offer is for new Costco memberships only or for former Costco members whose membership expired more than 18 months ago. So, if you’ve moved, there wasn’t a Costco nearby and you let your membership lapse for more than 18 months, you’re good to go to sign up for this deal again!

Also, you can avoid the lines at your Costco location by signing up for this Groupon Costco deal. This was the crowd at the new Costco in Maine near where I live. Yikes!

Terms and Conditions

• After purchase you’ll receive an email from Costco confirming your membership details. To pick up your membership card, stop by the membership counter at any Costco location and bring a copy of that email with your photo ID. Incentive will be emailed within 2 weeks after sign-up to qualifying members.
• You’re receiving a One-Year Costco Gold Star Membership
• A membership card for the Primary Cardholder and one additional Household Card for anyone living at the same address, over the age of 16

Again, this a Groupon-only deal for a Costco membership.

Other warehouse club memberships

Perhaps you prefer to shop at another warehouse club because it is more convenient to where you live than Costco is. Good news: Both BJs and Sam’s Club have Groupon deals right now for memberships. Plus, both tend to have gas stations where members can get a cheaper price when filling up the gas tank.

Crate and Barrel price match

It’s very clear that Crate and Barrel offers a price match and not a price adjustment. How?

The Crate and Barrel web page that explains its price match policy includes this sentence:

“Price match is offered only on the day of your original purchase.”

Dick’s Sporting Goods price match

Whether you’re looking for a price adjustment at Dick’s before or after you buy something, Dick’s Sporting Goods calls this a price match. In fact, there is an extensive explanation on the Dick’s website about its best price guarantee. Then, if you buy something and find it cheaper elsewhere, Dick’s says you have 14 days to request a price adjustment.

Foot Locker price adjustment

Foot Locker only offers a price adjustment within 10 days of a purchase. Any later than that, and you’re SOL.

Also, Foot Locker does not price match itself–store vs website and vice versa.

Gap/Gap Factory price adjustments

To get a price adjustment from an in-store purchase, you have to return to Gap or Gap Factory (wherever you made your purchase) with your receipt within 14 days of purchase. Please see the write up about the Old Navy price adjustment policy below.

Hollister price match

The only price that Hollister will match is its own. That is, if you find a better price on the Hollister website than an in-person store, then Hollister will adjust it to the lower price.

Two things to keep in mind about the Hollister price adjustment. One, you must make this request within 14 days of purchase. And, two, you must have paid full price for the item.

The Home Depot price adjustment

Home Depot refers to price adjustment and price matching as The Home Depot Guaranteed Low Price. It applies to both in store and online purchases. This page on The Home Depot website explains everything.

J. Crew price adjustment

While J Crew doesn’t price match, it does offer price adjustments. Here is the info I found on the J Crew website:

“We gladly honor a one-time price adjustment on full-price merchandise within seven days of the retail purchase or mail-order ship date if accompanied by the original receipt. Items not purchased at full price are ineligible for price adjustments. Orders that are already placed using a coupon or promotion are also ineligible for additional discounts. Promotions and coupons cannot be applied to previous purchases.”

Kate Spade price adjustment

If you shop in Kate Spade specialty boutiques, then you might be eligible for a price adjustment. The caveat? You must request this within seven days of purchase.

Other terms and conditions for getting a price adjustment is a little vague. You can read them for yourself on the Kate Spade site.

Finally, again, this is for Kate Spade products you buy at a Kate Spade store, not other stores. However, some Kate Spade products (purchased anywhere) have a one-year warranty.

Kohls price adjustment and price match

Kohls has a policy for both price adjustments and a price match. Unlike other stores that exclude sales items from price adjustments, Kohls does not. In other words, whether you purchased something at full price or on sale (but not clearance), you can get a price adjustment within 14 days of purchase at Kohl’s if the price drops. 

You just need your original receipt to prove the purchase. Bring it back to the store to get your adjustment.

The one caveat is that purchases during promotional periods, like Black Friday or Cyber Monday, never qualify. In addition, Kohl’s won’t price match during promotional periods either.

With regards to price matching, you can get a price match when you present a printout of a competitor’s advertisement showing the item and price of the identical item at Kohl’s. Also, if you found something on Kohls.com cheaper than in store, the physical store will match the Kohl’s website. 

Lowe’s price matching

Does Lowe’s do price matching? You bet they do. 

Here’s what the Lowe’s website says:

“If you find a lower price on an identical item at a local or online retail competitor (including shipping and delivery fees), just bring us the competitor’s current ad or show a printout, photo, smartphone display or app and we’ll match their price.”

Also, Lowe’s says it will price match the following online retailers:

• AceHardware.com
• Amazon.com
• BestBuy.com
• HomeDepot.com
• JCPenney.com
• Macys.com
• Target.com
• TractorSupply.com
• Walmart.com
• Wayfair.com

Also, I chatted with Lowes about price adjustments. Here’s what the associate told me when I asked if you can get a price adjustment after you’ve bought something.

“Absolutely! You can get the price difference with the help of our customer care team within 30 days for purchase.

You can contact our customer service at 1-800-445-6937, and they will help you further with it. Their working hours are 8:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. (ET), 7 days a week.”

Macy’s price match and adjustment policy

There are two kinds of retailers that Macy’s will not price match. One, online-only retailers, like Amazon. And two, warehouse or wholesale clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club. 

Now as far as price adjustments go, you have 10 days after purchase to make this request. You can visit the Macy’s website and open a chat to complete this adjustment. In other words, you do not have to return to the store to get this done.

There is one caveat for the Macy’s price adjustment policy. If you used any promotional code on your purchase, Macy’s will not do a price adjustment.

Meijer Price Match

Does Meijer price match? Well, only to itself.

In fact, its price adjustment policy is pretty clear. If something you bought goes on sale within 10 days of your purchase, then Meijer will refund the difference to you.

Of course, it excludes certain promotions from this price match/adjustment policy. This includes Black Friday deals.

Moosejaw Price Match

According to the Moosejaw website, you can get a price change before and after you buy something from them. So a match and an adjustment.

They suggest you call Moosejaw or chat with them online. Then, they’ll ask that you provide the information about where you saw a better price on an identical, in-stock item.

Of course, there are caveats. One, Moosejaw will not match items listed on marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay. This includes sites that require a membership or subscription fee.

Two, Moosejaw does not match certain brands, such as Brooks. Three, you can only price match three items at a time. And, four, the match cannot exceed 40% off the Moosejaw price.

Neiman Marcus price adjustment policy

It does not appear that Neiman Marcus offers price matching. However, it does allow for price adjustments with these caveats. One, you paid full price. And, two, they reduced the price within 10 days of your purchase. ​​

Nordstrom price adjustments and price matching

When you shop at Nordstrom.com, you’ll see price matching right on the website when searching for products.

For example, I recently purchased a pair of NYDJ jeans from Nordstrom online. When I checked out the Nordstrom app while researching this article, I found the image below. It shows that Nordstrom is price matching another retailer by knocking about $10 off the jean price.

Now, if I’d purchased these jeans 10 days ago (more like 10 weeks ago), I could have filed a request online from Nordstrom for a price adjustment. Nordstrom would have refunded me the $10 back to my original form of payment.

Old Navy price adjustment

Old Navy is part of the Gap family of stores. This includes Gap, Banana Republic, Gap Factory and Athleta. So, the advice I’m offering here for Old Navy applies to these other brands, too.

Gap stores do not price match but they do give price adjustments. However, if you used a coupon or bought on clearance, you can’t get an adjustment.

For an in-store purchase, you have to return to the store with your receipt within 14 days of purchase. For online purchases, make your adjustment request online. You don’t have to bring the item back with you.

Paragon Sports price adjustment

You have 10 days from your purchase date to request a Paragon Sports price adjustment. While Paragon Sports does not price match other retailers, it will price match itself. That is, if the item you bought goes on sale within 10 days of shopping, Paragon Sports will refund you the difference.

PetSmart price match

You can ask for a price match at PetSmart brick and mortar stores as well as online. This page explains the PetSmart price match guarantee.

Pottery Barn Kids price match

Pottery Barn Kids is one of the only members of the Pottery Barn family to offer price matching. Anyway, this page on the Pottery Barn Kids website explains how price match works.

REI price adjustment

REI will make an adjustment to a price to match a sale price. So, if you bought something online or in store at REI and within 14 days it goes on sale, REI will refund you the difference. More details about price adjustment here on the REI website.

Saks/Saks Off 5th price adjustments and price match

Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks Off 5th each have different policies with regards to price adjustment or price matches. For example, Saks Fifth Avenue will make a price adjustment within seven days of purchase. However, Saks Fifth Avenue does not have a price match policy.

On the hand, while Saks Off 5th doesn’t do price adjustments, it will consider a price match with the competition. Saks OFF 5TH competitor list includes:

• Nordstrom
• Nordstrom Rack
• Neiman Marcus Last Call
• Macy’s
• The Outnet

Target price adjustment policy

Target calls the store’s price adjustment policy a Price Match guarantee. That’s because Target combines both a price adjustment and price match into one transaction. 

That is, you can get a price match at time of purchase. Or, you can get a price adjustment within 14 days of a purchase.

However, during Target Deal Days during the holidays season, the price guarantee is much longer.

This page on the Target website has lots of helpful information about price match/adjustments work at Target, including that Target will price match grocery items as well as prices on Target.com.

Walmart price adjustment policy

The Walmart price adjustment policy is actually the brand’s commitment to price matching in store purchases at Walmart with Walmart.com. That is, they want to ensure that whether you shop Walmart in the store or online, you’re getting the lowest possible price at Walmart.

Williams-Sonoma price matching

Even though very few brands under the Williams-Sonoma umbrella (West Elm, Pottery Barn, Mark and Graham) offer price matching, the original Williams-Sonoma stores do. Here is what the Williams-Sonoma website says about this:

“We match the prices of new products sold directly by Amazon or sold on Amazon by these manufacturers: Sur la Table, Bloomingdales, Macy’s, and Crate & Barrel.  Our price match promise is valid for online and in-store purchases with proof of current competitor offer.”

Places that price match Amazon

Research shows that nearly 100 million people shop on Amazon each month. And many times, Amazon does have the best prices around.

However, some shoppers may want to buy elsewhere but still want to get Amazon’s prices. So they want to know which stores will price match Amazon.

Below is a list of stores I found that say specifically they will match Amazon prices. I’ll continue to update this list as I discover more stores.
