What to Buy in March

Wondering what to buy in March?

Well, I can help.

This is true even though March is not like other months that have holiday weekends with big sales.

However, there are plenty of opportunities to shop and get good deals in March.

Plus, spring begins in March, so that brings good things, too.

What to buy in March

Let’s start with some food holidays that you’ll find in March.

These give you the opportunity to get free food or heavily discounted food.

For example, you can always plan on getting free Rita’s Italian ice on the first day of spring, even if it snows like it did for my daughter and me in this photo.

Also, March is when Maine Maple Sunday occurs in, where else, Maine.

This is a weekend-long celebration of the maple syrup industry.

So, you can find great prices on maple syrup.

Finally, March is one of the months of the year with 31 days.

That means that on March 31, you can get a discount on Baskin Robbins ice cream.

They’re running this promotion on the 31st of the month throughout the year.

You know, because Baskin Robbins tagline is all about its 31 flavors.

What to buy in March after St. Patrick’s Day

You’ll get another great shopping opportunity in March after St. Patrick’s Day.

This is the perfect time to stock up on decorations, home decor, food and everything else in green, orange and white.

You can buy these items to save for next March’s St. Patrick’s day celebrations.

Or, you can stock up for other reasons, such as items for your gift closet.

Buy winter clothes in March

I know that in my articles about best buys in January and February sales I’ve mentioned buying winter clothing.

But now we’re really getting down to bare bones in the stores with everything winter.

So, look for some of the deepest discounts of the year on winter jackets and other winter gear.

Also, I’ll put in a plug for checking the LL Bean daily markdowns.

Buy winter weather gear in March

Just like winter clothing, you should see markdowns on winter gear, too.

We’re talking about things like skis, poles, snowboards, boots, skiing poles, helmets, goggles and more.

I would suggest looking for these deals in sporting goods stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods–not specialty ski shops.

Think about it this way: Dicks needs to clear floor space for warm-weather activity items.

On the other hand, specialty ski shops don’t have as big of an incentive to clear out ski items if they’re just shutting down for the season at the end of the month.

Winter tools

Speaking of winter, hopefully you’re done getting snow in March.

Do you need to buy a snowblower or even a new snow shovel for next year?

March would be a great time to look for discounts on these tools.

Did you know they sell “green” snowblowers now?

Well, we found a green snowblower marked down significantly at Lowes–in March.

Originally, this battery-operated snowblower was $479.

Or so I thought when I spotted it on the clearance aisle, where it was marked down to $239.

However, when I got to checkout, I discovered the original price tag underneath–$599.

I thought I was getting a good deal with $479 marked down to $239.

But $599 marked down to $239?

That’s a great deal on a snowblower in March!

March markdowns on luggage

While the absolute best time of the year to buy luggage is at the end of the summer travel season, March is also noteworthy.

That’s because luggage companies tend to come out with new lines in the spring.

They do this before that aforementioned summer travel season really kicks off.

Therefore, if you don’t mind owning last year’s “model” of suitcases and more, then you might want to think about buying new luggage in March.

And, frankly, are people even aware of what new luggage looks like?

For example, I know that my trusty L.L. Bean luggage is probably out of date because I have to pull the wheeled suitcases behind me.

I believe those are called Rollaboards.

On the other hand, I know that more modern versions of suitcases have four wheels that you can direct and roll while it is still upright.

It’s called spinner luggage.

Truthfully, I had to look that up because I wasn’t familiar with the term.

And if my L.L. Bean luggage ever wears out, I’ll definitely shop for a new spinner suitcase.

They look so fancy.

What not to buy in March

There are plenty of items that show up in stores in March to welcome the new season.

Often, with this new inventory comes higher prices.

For example, I mentioned that new luggage models debut in March.

And if stores still have last year’s models, you could get a good price on luggage.

However, on the off chance that they don’t, I would say you don’t want to buy luggage in March.

Some other items not to buy in March, to avoid higher prices?

  • Outdoor furniture
  • Grills
  • Airline tickets (think spring break)
  • Vacuum cleaners (spring cleaning)
  • Spring clothing
  • Appliances (wait until the next holiday weekend)
