Is Peapod worth it?
Normally, I would answer the question Is Peapod worth it? positively. However, Peapod is experiencing significant delays in processing orders and having in-stock items. In addition, Peapod is only available in a small number of states.
So for the time being, I cannot recommend Peapod.
Other grocery delivery options
Because I can’t recommend Peapod right now, I’ve just written this article on 34 stores that offer grocery pickup or delivery options. I suggest you click right over to the blog post. With 34 stores there is bound to be another supermarket option for your grocery shopping to be delivered.
In the meantime, the three services below can help you get your groceries delivered–even if you live in Peapod territory. Most of the 34 stores in my aformentioned blog post are using one of these three services for their delivery anyway.
Instacart is the go to service for quick and effective grocery delivery. Customers select groceries from various retailers, and then Instacart shoppers will do the shopping for you. They’ll also deliver when they are finished. Consider tipping extra for your Instacart person during this pandemic time.
Finally, not sure if Instacart is available in your area? From an Instacart press release:
“Instacart today powers pickup for more than 50 grocery partners, including Food Lion, Gelson’s, Publix, Price Chopper, Schnucks, Shop ‘n Save, The Fresh Market, Wegmans and more, across more than 30 states.”
In addition to delivering food for takeout, Postmates can also get your supermarket order. This is true in a limited number of cities. They are:
- San Francisco
- Los Angeles
- New York City
- Washington DC
- Orange County
- San Diego
- Las Vegas
- East Bay
- Long Beach
- Oklahoma City
Postmates works with Jewel-Osco and Winn-Dixie, among other supermarkets.
Here is how Shipt describes its grocery delivery and other services its delivers:
“From phone chargers to frozen pizzas, Shipt delivers from popular stores in as soon as 1 hour. Saving time, fuel, and headspace, same-day delivery on household essentials and groceries is no-brainer for busy lives.”
Shipt works with Target, Publix and HEB for grocery shopping and delivery, to mention a few.
Update on Peapod and the current health crisis situation
Not surprisingly lots of Americans are wanting to get their groceries delivered during the the current health crisis situation. Because of that many are turning to Peapod to get their groceries delivered. I thought it was important to share this update, direct from the Peapod.com website.
Delays with home delivery
People are reporting that where they used to be able to get groceries next day, sometimes they’re having to wait more than that to schedule a delivery. This is obviously from increased demand. Here’s what Peapod says:
“We recognize that online shoppers may be experiencing delays on our website as well as with our delivery times. This is due to extremely high demand, and our teams are working incredibly hard to ensure the site is running smoothly so that you can continue to receive orders when you need them.”
Pickup service temporarily suspended
“As a result of unprecedented demand as well as product shortages in some areas, we have temporarily suspended our online pickup service until further notice. Our store associates will instead focus on stocking product and other key priorities that will better meet the needs of all customers at this time. The service will be made available again once product availability increases.”
Limited product availability
Because many Americans have been hoarding cleaning supplies and other personal care items, Peapod is limiting how many you can buy in one order.
“Due to high demand and to support all customers, we will be limiting select health and beauty care, cleaning, and paper products to 5 each per order.”
If I hear of any updates from Peapod during this health pandemic, I’ll let you know.
Peapod no longer in the Midwest
Peapod is no longer offering its services in the Midwest. That means that shoppers in Chicagoland, Wisconsin and Indiana will no longer have access to Peapod grocery delivery. I’m so so sorry to share this with my readers in the Midwest. Yes, Peapod is leaving the Midwest.
Also changing on the Peapod landscape: Peapod delivers in the Washington, DC area is now Giant Delivers. So no more Peapod for those living in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. And, in fact, when I searched my old zip code in Pennsylvania, it seems like Peapod is not serving the Philadelphia area anymore either.
Peapod expands East Coast delivery
On the flipside Peapod will be expanding on the East Coast and in New England so that shoppers living near Hannaford and Food Lion stores will be able to use Peapod to have their groceries delivered to their home. This includes delivery of alcoholic beverages in certain states. But more about that below. Given this news, I’ve updated my blog post today. I’m confident that of all the Peapod reviews out there, mine is the most up-to-date for 2020!
Finally, when it comes to Peapod and the Peapod PodPass, keep the following things in mind:
First, Peapod is one word. It is not pea pod–two words.
Second, the same with Peapod Podpass. Podpass is one word, not Pod Pass.
Finally, it’s not called the Peapod Pass. It is simply PodPass–with both Ps capitalized.
My Peapod story
For starters, we have moved and no longer live in a Peapod delivery service area. However, I still highly recommend Peapod. So if you’re looking for honest Peapod grocery delivery reviews or a grocery delivery service near me now, I think you’ll be pleased with this blog post answering is Peapod worth it. It’s been updated for 2020.
If, like us, you aren’t able to use Peapod delivery because of where you live, no worries. I’ve got Walmart Grocery Pickup reviews for you to read and consider.
Here are a few new Peapod benefits
Once of the reasons that I believe those living in Peapod areas will find it to be worthwhile is that Peapod grocery shopping continues to update its offerings. I’ve highlighed some of the new ones here.
Always opt-in to Peapod emails
In addition, always sign up for Peapod emails. It will help you save money on your next Peapod order. See below on how I was able to save $3 on ice cream. It was something I was going to buy anyway. With this code I got in an email, I was able to get a free tote bag filled with $25 worth of free products, including toothpaste, shampoo and soup. On another Peapod order I saved $10 by using a special code, also from my email.

Sign up for Peapod PodPass
Peapod now has something called PodPass. Some might call it the Peapod Pass. What is PodPass? It offers you one low annual fee and unlimited free deliveries. Like Amazon Prime it’s a service you pay for with a one-time fee that lets you get free delivery and pick-up. Also, like Amazon Prime, you get a free trial–this time a free six-month trial.
After that time, you’ll automatically rollover to a Peapod PodPass annual fee of about $120, which gives you a 12-month PodPass. So, while there’s no Peapod annual fee, per se, the Peapod fees for PodPass or the PodPass annual cost is $120. If you use Peapod twice a month in a year and spend at least $100 on your grocery orders, then the Peapod #PodPass more than pays for itself and makes it so that the Podpass cost is worth it.
As a family that’s used meal kits from both HelloFresh and Blue Apron, I was curious to see what kind of meal kits Peapod had to offer. This blog post reviewing meal kit services explains why you might want to order a meal kit with your next order.
Now that I’ve explained the newest benefits of using Peapod, let me get into the nitty gritty of why I believe Peapod is worth it.
What is Peapod? How does Peapod work?
I’ve updated additional information on my original Peapod reviews to answer the question, “Is Peapod worth it?” Think of this blog post as your Peapod FAQ or Peapod delivery FAQ. Hopefully it also answers the question, “How does Peapod work?”
I first tried out Peapod grocery shopping home delivery a few years ago. Peapod is a grocery delivery service that’s great for busy moms. I liked Peapod because I can get the grocery shopping done when it is convenient for me. Oh and still be able to use coupons to save money. As a shopper who wants to be smart with her money, here’s what I love most about this service. And, why I believe Peapod grocery delivery service is worth it.
By shopping for groceries online, I can keep tabs on my, well, supermarket tab as I add items to my shopping cart. If I only want to spend $100 on groceries, I can see right there on the screen when I’m nearing my limit. This helps to keep me on budget. That’s something that’s super important to do and not easy to accomplish at the supermarket.
Peapod was founded in 1989 and is America’s largest online internet grocery shopping and delivery service. Some people call it Peapod grocery or Peapod groceries. While this service may have started in one area of the country only, that is no longer true. This service works in two ways–home delivery (my preferred method) or pick up at the store.
Currently Peapod serves the following markets. You can search for applicable markets with Peapod delivery zip codes. You’ll find this zip code box on the Peapod site when you click through. It will ask you to “Enter Delivery Zip Code.” This is how you’ll determine if you live in a Peapod delivery area or not and will answer your question, “Does Peapod deliver to me?”
- Southern New Hampshire
- Rhode Island
New York Metro Area
- New York City
- Long Island
- New Jersey
Update: It seems as if Giant Foods has taken over grocery delivery through its own service, not through Peapod. It’s one of the reasons you won’t find Maryland or Virignia listed in this review anymore.
So, if you live near a Giant Food store, you’re going to be getting grocery delivery a different way. I’m in the process of researching this change and will update this blog post once I have that confirmed–or write a new review of Giant Food delivery.
In the meantime you might want to consider signing up with Shipt. I just checked my old zip code in Bucks County, and Shipt is available for grocery deliveries from Weis Markets.
- S.E. Pennsylvania
- Central Pennsylvania Peapod.com now offers grocery delivery service to more than 60 new ZIP codes in the Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg, and Carlisle PA area!
As Peapod continues to add service areas, it adds on savings incentives for new customers to use.
Don’t live in a Peapod delivery market? What about Amazon Fresh? Save $25 on your first Amazon Fresh order with code FRESH25.
Peapod partners with local grocery stores to bring groceries to your door, literally. So when I lived in the Philadelphia area, Peapod’s partner was Giant Food Stores (get $15 off). Therefore, we used Giant Peapod delivery or Peapod by Giant or Peapod Giant delivery or Giant direct Peapod.
When I lived in New Jersey, I shopped Peapod Stop and Shop through my local Stop & Shop (get $15 off). Stop & Shop is also the Peapod partner in New England. Peapod by Stop & Shop also offers an option to pick up your groceries at your local Stop & Shop as part of Stop & Shop Peapod. Therefore, we used Stop and Shop Peapod or Peapod Stop & Shop.
When it comes to the Peapod Stop and Shop delivery fee, it’s the same as the Giant Peapod cost for delivery. In fact, it’s all the same, regardless of the store where you shop.
How Peapod pricing works
Here is what originally convinced me to give Peapod delivery a try. I learned that Peapod prices items or Peapod pricing overall is based on the average for your area. So, are Peapod prices the same as in store? Well, yes and no. Is Peapod more expensive than the store? Probably not.
I was always under the impression that the Giant in my town was more expensive than Giant supermarkets in other nearby towns. So I was excited to see how much cheaper my groceries might be. This would definitely make Peapod worth it.
Also, I learned that Peapod doubles coupons. When you shop Peapod.com, Peapod will double up to $.99 per coupon (unless otherwise specified on coupon). That’s the same coupon policy as Giant and Stop and Shop. I get my coupons off of Coupons.com before I shop. Plus, you have access to thousands of sale items every week. So Stop and Shop Peapod and Giant Peapod both offer you the same couponing opportunities and savings you can find in store.
Is Peapod Worth It? The Pros
The biggest pro? I don’t have to go to the grocery store at all. Plus, I can shop when it is convenient for me right. I can do it from my computer. What I especially liked is that I didn’t have to go through that awful exercise at the supermarket. You know the one.
First, you put everything in a cart. Next, you take everything out for checkout. After that, you bag everything up and put in the car. Then, when you get home, you take everything out of the car into the house. Finally, you put all of the groceries away.
With Peapod the driver delivered my groceries right into my kitchen. The only step left for me was putting the groceries away. I loved it!
Don’t live in a Peapod area? You can get groceries delivered from your favorite stores with Instacart! Very soon I’ll write a review of Instacart vs Peapod.
You Can Use Coupons
Another reason Peapod is worth it: as you place your order, you can toggle over to your favorite online couponing sites like Coupons.com. There, you can see if there are any coupons that match items on your list.
Usually, when I food shop, I cash in dozens of coupons. But maybe the fact that I wasn’t buying stuff to use up coupons helped me to spend less money overall. I’ve since learned how to be a bit more savvy about how many coupons I had and were able to use. Recently, my coupons added up to $10.50 saved on an order of about $100. That’s 10%! I realize that’s not Extreme Couponing savings but I don’t believe those are real anyway.
You Can Suggest New Products
The products available via the Peapod site may not be as extensive as the normal grocery store. For example, My kids love V8 fruit juice in a punch flavor. I could only find the orange flavor on Peapod. However, this site has now added a feature that allow you suggest new products for them to add to their offerings. I like that!
As I said earlier, always sign up for the Peapod emails. It helps you save even more. Finally, you can do your grocery shopping on the Peapod website on your tablet. Or, you can use the Peapod app on your Smartphone.
Peapod makes packing lunches easier
If you’re trying to save money by bringing your own lunch, Peapod can help make packing lunches easier. This is true if you’re packing lunches for yourself or for your children. You can let your children get involved with the grocery shopping, too. Check out the lunch box cheat sheet below to make buying for and packing lunches easier.
Peapod will recycle your plastic bags for you
Are you trying to cut down on your plastic use? Do you like to take your own bags with you to the store. If so, then shopping with Peapod might give you pause. Why? Because your groceries will come in plastic Peapod bags.
But here’s the good news. You can give your plastic bags from your previous Peapod grocery delivery order to the driver the next time they arrive. They will bring them back to the stores and recycle them for you.
Where I Noticed Savings
After the first time I used Giant Peapod delivery, I brought my receipt with me to the actual Giant store so I could compare prices. Of the 22 items I ended up buying via Peapod by Giant, 13 of my Peapod groceries were the exact same price.
So are Peapod prices the same as in store? Yes, they were. Of course that means that 9 weren’t–but not all of them were more expensive. So, does Peapod cost more? Not every time or even at all.
Where I noticed the biggest savings via Peapod groceries was with meat.
For example, I bought Top Round London Broil, about 2.5 pounds of it, and paid $6.24. In the Giant store that same meat was priced at $3.99 per pound. That means I would have spent $9.98 at the store. Another meat savings was with ground sirloin 90 percent lean. On Peapod I paid $3.99 per pound, for only a pound. At the Giant store, that same meat was priced $5.44 per pound.
So is Peapod Giant expensive or more expensive than the store? Overall, no.
Is Peapod Worth It? The Cons
As far as the cons go, there aren’t many with Peapod delivery. One frustration though: certain products are not advertised by their brand name, so matching with coupons can be harder to do. For example, one time I decided to buy clementines. On the Peapod site, it just said “clementines mandarin oranges.” But when my order arrived later on, the clementines were actually Halos Clementines. I had a $2 off coupon for them that I could have used.
So with my next Peapod order, I made sure to hand the driver my Halos Clementines coupon, even though, again, the site did not include the brand. But sure enough, they were Halos again. That means that I saved $2. Cha-ching!
How much does Peapod cost?
How much does Peapod delivery cost? Well, it depends on how much you order. And it depends on if you’re getting Peapod grocery delivery or if you’re doing Peapod pickup at Giant or Stop and Shop.
Cost of Peapod grocery delivery
When asking what the cost of Peapod grocery delivery is, what you really may be asking is what is the Peapod delivery fee or how much is Peapod delivery? Well, it varies. Here is your Peapod delivery FAQ on prices and fees, and the Peapod delivery cost.
For example, you have to order at least $60 in groceries to qualify for Peapod delivery overall. So the Peapod minimum order for delivery is $60 Orders of $60 to $100 incur Peapod delivery fees of $9.95. Orders over $100 get a discounted Peapod delivery charge. That discount is the original Peapod delivery fees of $6.95.
Cost of Peapod pickup
You can pickup your Peapod groceries at 200-plus locations. This would be at Giant or Stop and Shop stores, based on where you live. So how much does Peapod pick up cost? As long as you order $30 in grocery, you won’t be charged a pick up fee. So the Peapod minimum order for pick up is just $30.
Is Peapod expensive?
Are you wondering “Is Peapod expensive?” I’ll reiterate what I’ve already said in this Peapod Grocery review.
First, the prices you’ll pay for Peapod are the same or similar to what you would pay in store. Peapod averages prices from your area. So, does Peapod markup prices? I definitely don’t think so. Sometimes, the prices were actually cheaper.
Second, if you’re ordering at least $100 in groceries, you’ll get a discounted Peapod delivery fee. Don’t want to pay the delivery fee at all? Sign up for PodPass.
Finally, if you’re a busy parent like I am, then even if you do pay the $6.95 delivery fee, I believe the time you’ll save from not going to the store is worth the $6.95–if not more! So is Peapod expensive? From a time-saving perspective, I say, “No!”
However, as a busy working mom who uses coupons, $6.95 or $9.95 is worth my time. Also, if I can get the discounted rate rate for choosing my delivery time–minus $4–plus a few more dollars off in coupons, then having groceries brought to me is, like I said, worth my time.
Peapod Same Day
When I was using Peapod, Peapod same day ordering and delivery. However, that seems to have changed.
I got the following information from the Peapod website:
“Peapod has recently begun offering shoppers a same-day delivery option in select pilot markets. While this is in test phases, the company aims to provide same-day or immediate delivery options to 65% of our shoppers by end of 2020.
To see if your order is available for same-day delivery in the pilot area, complete your order as usual via Peapod.com and look for the one-hour delivery window at checkout.
In the meantime, Peapod continues to offer the convenience of next day service as well as pick-up locations at more than 200 locations.”
Peapod FAQ: Alcohol delivery
One of the most common questions I get about Peapod is can you use Peapod to have alcoholic beverages delivered. Peapod will tell you that in some markets it does deliver alcohol. But they don’t make it easy to figure out which of these markets allow alcohol in your Peapod delivery.
So I did your homework for you and created the Peapod FAQ for you.
States with Peapod delivery for alcohol
We’re already established that Peapod delivers to seven states. They are Pennsyvlania, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
However, based on my zip code research, alcohol isn’t available with your delivery in all seven states. Instead, you can only get alcohol delivered with your Peapod order in Connecticut and New York. Sorry, residents of the other five states!
Peapod tipping policy
So what is the Peapod tipping policy? Well, I know that every time I’ve used Peapod, I have tipped the Peapod driver. And the driver has never refused. Also, when you checkout online, you can add in a tip, if you want. So I’d say that if you are wondering if there is a Peapod tipping policy, there definitely is and tips are definitely allowed.
As far as how much to tip Peapod driver, here’s what I think. I think tipping $5 is a great idea. Also, I recently learned that if you put the tip on a credit card, it is taxed and the person doesn’t get it until their next pay period. However, if you give them cash, they get to keep it that day. I’ve started doing this–cash that day–with all of the services I use that expect a tip.
Do I tip the Peapod delivery person
So if you’re wondering, “Do I tip Peapod delivery person?” or “How much to tip the Peapod driver?” the answer is you really should and $5 is probably sufficient. And if you do tip the Peapod driver, try to give them cash when they show up. This is versus putting it on your credit card when you place your order.
Update: I’ve had people message me to see if the tipping policy has changed. The subject lines of these messages was always how much to topi peapod driver 2019 or Peapod tipping 2019 or Peapod tipping 2020. Anyway, the answer is still the same. Yes, you tip the driver. I like giving $5 in cash for the reasons mentioned earlier.
Overall thoughts on if Peapod is worth it
So is Peapod worth it? Absolutely yes. By using Peapod, I’ve saved money AND I’ve saved time. I don’t have to go to grocery store to get my groceries. Plus, I feel like I can do a better job of keeping my grocery spending in check by shopping via a website.
Peapod is even better at the holiday time. Think about the crazy days before Easter, Passover, Thanksgiving, Christmas or Super Bowl Sunday, or on weekends when most people grocery shop.
With Peapod delivery, I can avoid the crowded supermarket all together. Now that’s worth more than money can buy and definitely makes Peapod worth it in my book.
