is peapod worth it delivery truckI’ve had to significantly update this blog post called Is Peapod worth it? Why? Because Peapod’s parent company is doing away with the Peapod brand. Instead, the supermarkets that had previously partnered with Peapod–Giant Food, Giant Direct, Stop and Shop and others–are taking over the delivery or pick up of your groceries.

That means the Peapod Stop and Shop or Stop and Shop Peapod is now, simply, Stop and Shop Delivery. Similarly, Peapod Giant or Giant Peapod is now either Giant Food Delivery or Giant Direct Delivery, based on where you live.

The good news? With the new programs come new ways to save for customers that have never tried Stop and Shop Delivery or the other formerly Peapod programs. Check out the links below!

Peapod update for 2020

So, I’ll continue to keep this post up here to talk about my Peapod experience overall. However, I’m going to be writing separate blog post reviews of my experience ordering groceries when Giant was my grocery store and then Stop and Shop was my grocery store

So if you’re looking for honest Peapod grocery delivery reviews or a grocery delivery service near me now, I think you’ll be pleased with this blog post answering is Peapod worth it. It’s been updated for 2020.

Peapod no longer in the Midwest

Peapod is no longer offering its services in the Midwest. That means that shoppers in Chicagoland, Wisconsin and Indiana will no longer have access to Peapod grocery delivery. I’m so so sorry to share this with my readers in the Midwest. Yes, Peapod is leaving the Midwest.

Giant Food and Giant/Martin customers now order direct

When I lived in Eastern Pennsylvania, I did my food shopping at Giant. When I had my groceries delivered from Giant, Peapod did it. No more.

Now, if your local grocery store is Giant/Martin’s, you’ll need to order your groceries directly from each brand. Here’s a bit more about that.

Giant Direct/Martin’s Direct

The Giant Company runs both Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct. Giant was where I did my food shopping when I lived in Eastern Pennsylvania.

If you live in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia or West Virginia, and your grocery store is Giant or Martin’s, then Giant Direct is the online grocery service you want to sign up for

Giant Food

For 84 years, Giant has been dedicated to bringing customers great quality, value and service. So, if you live in Delaware, Virginia, Maryland or Washington, DC, and you want to order groceries online for delivery or pickup, you’ll do that through the Giant Food website now

I did a taste taste of Giant and Martin’s brand foods versus national brands.

Peapod expands East Coast delivery

On the flipside Peapod will be expanding on the East Coast and in New England so that shoppers living near Stop and Shop, Hannaford and Food Lion stores will be able to use Peapod to have their groceries delivered to their home. This includes delivery of alcoholic beverages in certain states. But more about that below.

Given this news, I’ve updated my blog post today. I’m confident that of all the Peapod reviews out there, mine is the most up-to-date for 2020!

Finally, when it comes to Peapod and the Peapod PodPass, keep the following things in mind:

First, Peapod is one word. It is not pea pod–two words.

Second, the same with Peapod Podpass. Podpass is one word, not Pod Pass.

Finally, it’s not called the Peapod Pass. It is simply PodPass–with both Ps capitalized.

Is Peapod worth it? My Peapod story

Once of the reasons that I believe those living in Peapod areas will find it to be worthwhile is that Peapod grocery shopping continues to update its offerings. I’ve highlighed some of the new ones here.

Always opt-in to Peapod emails

In addition, always sign up for Peapod emails. It will help you save money on your next Peapod order. See below on how I was able to save $3 on ice cream. It was something I was going to buy anyway.

With this code I got in an email, I was able to get a free tote bag filled with $25 worth of free products, including toothpaste, shampoo and soup. On another Peapod order I saved $10 by using a special code, also from my email.

Peapod now has meal kits

As a family that’s used meal kits from both HelloFresh and Blue Apron, I was curious to see what kind of meal kits Peapod had to offer. This blog post reviewing meal kit services explains why you might want to order a meal kit with your next order.

Blue Apron Labor Day 2020 Sale

Blue Apron is offer a Labor Day Flash Sale. That is, if you sign up between now and 9/8/20, you'll save $80 over your first four boxes.

Now that I’ve explained the newest benefits of using Peapod, let me get into the nitty gritty of why I believe Peapod is worth it.

What is Peapod? How does Peapod work?

I’ve updated additional information on my original Peapod reviews to answer the question, “Is Peapod worth it? Think of this blog post as your Peapod FAQ or Peapod delivery FAQ. Hopefully it also answers the question, “How does Peapod work?”

I first tried out Peapod grocery shopping home delivery a few years ago. Peapod is a grocery delivery service that’s great for busy moms. I liked Peapod because I can get the grocery shopping done when it is convenient for me. Oh and still be able to use coupons to save money. As a shopper who wants to be smart with her money, here’s what I love most about this service. And, why I believe Peapod grocery delivery service is worth it.

By shopping for groceries online, I can keep tabs on my, well, supermarket tab as I add items to my shopping cart. If I only want to spend $100 on groceries, I can see right there on the screen when I’m nearing my limit. This helps to keep me on budget. That’s something that’s super important to do and not easy to accomplish at the supermarket.

Peapod was founded in 1989 and is America’s largest online internet grocery shopping and delivery service. Some people call it Peapod grocery or Peapod groceries. While this service may have started in one area of the country only, that is no longer true. This service works in two ways–home delivery (my preferred method) or pick up at the store.

Wanna know how easy it is to use Peapod? My 82-year-old father uses it to get his groceries delivered!

Peapod Markets

Currently Peapod serves the following markets. You can search for applicable markets with Peapod delivery zip codes. You’ll find this zip code box on the Peapod site when you click through. It will ask you to “Enter Delivery Zip Code.” This is how you’ll determine if you live in a Peapod delivery area or not and will answer your question, “Does Peapod deliver to me?”

New England

  • Connecticut
  • Massachusetts
  • Southern New Hampshire
  • Rhode Island

New York Metro Area

  • New York City
  • Long Island
  • New Jersey

Pennsylvania

Update: As I mentioned earlier, Giant Direct has taken over grocery delivery through its own service, not through Peapod. It’s one of the reasons you won’t find Maryland or Virignia listed in this review anymore.

So, if you live near a Giant Food store, you’re going to be getting grocery delivery a different way. I’m in the process of researching this change and will update this blog post once I have that confirmed–or write a new review of Giant Food delivery.

In the meantime you might want to consider signing up with Shipt. I just checked my old zip code in Bucks County, and Shipt is available for grocery deliveries from Weis Markets

  • S.E. Pennsylvania

Peapod Partners

Peapod partners with local grocery stores to bring groceries to your door, literally. So when I lived in the Philadelphia area, Peapod’s partner was Giant Food Stores . Therefore, we used Giant Peapod delivery or Peapod by Giant or Peapod Giant delivery or Giant direct Peapod. Again, now you’ll order directly from Giant.

When I lived in New Jersey, I shopped Peapod Stop and Shop through my local Stop & Shop. Stop & Shop is also the Peapod partner in New England. Peapod by Stop & Shop also offers an option to pick up your groceries at your local Stop & Shop as part of Stop & Shop Peapod. Therefore, we used Stop and Shop Peapod or Peapod Stop & Shop.

When it comes to the Peapod Stop and Shop delivery fee, it’s the same as the Giant Peapod cost for delivery. In fact, it’s all the same, regardless of the store where you shop.

How Peapod pricing works

Here is what originally convinced me to give Peapod delivery a try. I learned that Peapod prices items or Peapod pricing overall is based on the average for your area.  So, are Peapod prices the same as in store? Well, yes and no. Is Peapod more expensive than the store? Probably not.

I was always under the impression that the Giant in my town was more expensive than Giant supermarkets in other nearby towns. So I was excited to see how much cheaper my groceries might be. This would definitely make Peapod worth it.

Also, I learned that Peapod doubles coupons. When you shop Peapod.com, Peapod will double up to $.99 per coupon (unless otherwise specified on coupon). That’s the same coupon policy as Giant and Stop and Shop. I get my coupons off of Coupons.com before I shop. Plus, you have access to thousands of sale items every week. So Stop and Shop Peapod and Giant Peapod both offer you the same couponing opportunities and savings you can find in store.

Is Peapod Worth It? The Pros

The biggest pro? I don’t have to go to the grocery store at all. Plus, I can shop when it is convenient for me right. I can do it from my computer. What I especially liked is that I didn’t have to go through that awful exercise at the supermarket. You know the one.

First, you put everything in a cart. Next, you take everything out for checkout. After that, you bag everything up and put in the car. Then, when you get home, you take everything out of the car into the house. Finally, you put all of the groceries away.

With Peapod the driver delivered my groceries right into my kitchen. The only step left for me was putting the groceries away. I loved it!

You Can Use Coupons

is peapod worth it
Here’s the email Peapod sent to me, confirming I’d saved $10.50 by using coupons.

Another reason Peapod is worth it: as you place your order, you can toggle over to your favorite online couponing sites like Coupons.com. There, you can see if there are any coupons that match items on your list.

Usually, when I food shop, I cash in dozens of coupons. But maybe the fact that I wasn’t buying stuff to use up coupons helped me to spend less money overall. I’ve since learned how to be a bit more savvy about how many coupons I had and were able to use. Recently, my coupons added up to $10.50 saved on an order of about $100. That’s 10%! I realize that’s not Extreme Couponing savings but I don’t believe those are real anyway.

You Can Suggest New Products

is peapod worth itThe products available via the Peapod site may not be as extensive as the normal grocery store. For example, My kids love V8 fruit juice in a punch flavor. I could only find the orange flavor on Peapod. However, this site has now added a feature that allow you suggest new products for them to add to their offerings. I like that!

As I said earlier, always sign up for the Peapod emails. It helps you save even more. Finally, you can do your grocery shopping on the Peapod website on your tablet. Or, you can use the Peapod app on your Smartphone.

Peapod will recycle your plastic bags for you

Are you trying to cut down on your plastic use? Do you like to take your own bags with you to the store. If so, then shopping with Peapod might give you pause. Why? Because your groceries will come in plastic Peapod bags.

But here’s the good news. You can give your plastic bags from your previous Peapod grocery delivery order to the driver the next time they arrive. They will bring them back to the stores and recycle them for you.
peapod will recycle the plastic grocery bags for you. Noticed how on the Peapod bag it says that you can give these back to the Peapod grocery delivery driver so they can be recycled at the store.

Where I Noticed Savings

After the first time I used Giant Peapod delivery, I brought my receipt with me to the actual Giant store so I could compare prices. Of the 22 items I ended up buying via Peapod by Giant, 13 of my Peapod groceries were the exact same price.

So are Peapod prices the same as in store? Yes, they were. Of course that means that 9 weren’t–but not all of them were more expensive. So, does Peapod cost more? Not every time or even at all.

Where I noticed the biggest savings via Peapod groceries was with meat.

For example, I bought Top Round London Broil, about 2.5 pounds of it, and paid $6.24. In the Giant store that same meat was priced at $3.99 per pound. That means I would have spent $9.98 at the store. Another meat savings was with ground sirloin 90 percent lean. On Peapod I paid $3.99 per pound, for only a pound. At the Giant store, that same meat was priced $5.44 per pound.

So is Peapod Giant expensive or more expensive than the store? Overall, no.

Is Peapod Worth It? The Cons

As far as the cons go, there aren’t many with Peapod delivery. One frustration though: certain products are not advertised by their brand name, so matching with coupons can be harder to do. For example, one time I decided to buy clementines. On the Peapod site, it just said “clementines mandarin oranges.” But when my order arrived later on, the clementines were actually Halos Clementines. I had a $2 off coupon for them that I could have used.

So with my next Peapod order, I made sure to hand the driver my Halos Clementines coupon, even though, again, the site did not include the brand. But sure enough, they were Halos again. That means that I saved $2. Cha-ching!

How much does Peapod cost?

How much does Peapod delivery cost? Well, it depends on how much you order. And it depends on if you’re getting Peapod grocery delivery or if you’re doing Peapod pickup at Giant or Stop and Shop.

Cost of Peapod grocery delivery

When asking what the cost of Peapod grocery delivery is, what you really may be asking is what is the Peapod delivery fee or how much is Peapod delivery? Well, it varies. Here is your Peapod delivery FAQ on prices and fees, and the Peapod delivery cost.

For example, you have to order at least $60 in groceries to qualify for Peapod delivery overall<. So the Peapod minimum order for delivery is $60 Orders of $60 to $100 incur Peapod delivery fees of $9.95. Orders over $100 get a discounted Peapod delivery charge. That discount is the original Peapod delivery fees of $6.95.

Is Peapod expensive?

Are you wondering “Is Peapod expensive?” I’ll reiterate what I’ve already said in this Peapod Grocery review.

First, the prices you’ll pay for Peapod are the same or similar to what you would pay in store. Peapod averages prices from your area. So, does Peapod markup prices? I definitely don’t think so. Sometimes, the prices were actually cheaper.

Second, if you’re ordering at least $100 in groceries, you’ll get a discounted Peapod delivery fee. Don’t want to pay the delivery fee at all? Sign up for PodPass.

Finally, if you’re a busy parent like I am, then even if you do pay the $6.95 delivery fee, I believe the time you’ll save from not going to the store is worth the $6.95–if not more! So is Peapod expensive? From a time-saving perspective, I say, “No!”

peapod grocery delivery truck

However, as a busy working mom who uses coupons, $6.95 or $9.95 is worth my time. Also, if I can get the discounted rate rate for choosing my delivery time–minus $4–plus a few more dollars off in coupons, then having groceries brought to me is, like I said, worth my time.

Finally, in case you didn’t know, these are the best days to go grocery shopping.

Peapod FAQ: Alcohol delivery

One of the most common questions I get about Peapod is can you use Peapod to have alcoholic beverages delivered. Peapod will tell you that in some markets it does deliver alcohol. But they don’t make it easy to figure out which of these markets allow alcohol in your Peapod delivery.

So I did your homework for you and created the Peapod FAQ for you.

States with Peapod delivery for alcohol

We’re already established that Peapod delivers to seven states. They are Pennsyvlania, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

However, based on my zip code research, alcohol isn’t available with your delivery in all seven states. Instead, you can only get alcohol delivered with your Peapod order in Connecticut and New York. Sorry, residents of the other five states!

Peapod tipping policy

So what is the Peapod tipping policy? Well, I know that every time I’ve used Peapod, I have tipped the Peapod driver. And the driver has never refused. Also, when you checkout online, you can add in a tip, if you want. So I’d say that if you are wondering if there is a Peapod tipping policy, there definitely is and tips are definitely allowed.

As far as how much to tip Peapod driver, here’s what I think. I think tipping $5 is a great idea. Also, I recently learned that if you put the tip on a credit card, it is taxed and the person doesn’t get it until their next pay period. However, if you give them cash, they get to keep it that day. I’ve started doing this–cash that day–with all of the services I use that expect a tip.

Do I tip the Peapod delivery person

So if you’re wondering, “Do I tip Peapod delivery person?” or “How much to tip the Peapod driver?” the answer is you really should and $5 is probably sufficient. And if you do tip the Peapod driver, try to give them cash when they show up. This is versus putting it on your credit card when you place your order.

Update: I’ve had people message me to see if the tipping policy has changed. The subject lines of these messages was always how much to topi peapod driver 2019 or Peapod tipping 2019 or Peapod tipping 2020. Anyway, the answer is still the same. Yes, you tip the driver. I like giving $5 in cash for the reasons mentioned earlier.

Overall thoughts on if Peapod is worth it

By using Peapod, I’ve saved money AND I’ve saved time. I don’t have to go to grocery store to get my groceries. Plus, I feel like I can do a better job of keeping my grocery spending in check by shopping via a website.

Peapod is even better at the holiday time. Think about the crazy days before Easter, Passover, Thanksgiving, Christmas or Super Bowl Sunday, or on weekends when most people grocery shop. With Peapod delivery, I can avoid the crowded supermarket all together. Now that’s worth more than money can buy.

Other grocery delivery options

If you don’t live in a Peapod area, I would recommend you checkout my article on 39 stores that offer grocery pickup or delivery options. With 39 stores there is bound to be another supermarket option for your grocery shopping to be delivered.

  1. Peapod is great! I have been using them constantly for 2 years now. Also, they regularly have great discount offers available to save you a bit of money on your order. They are posted online and you can see them on the website

    Hope this helps!

    • Hi, Gennie:

Thanks for asking. That’s a great question.

I have found that there are certain items that seem to be more expensive via Peapod but others that are WAY cheaper. So I figure it all balances out in the end. Plus, I never need to go to the store. And don’t forget: you can use coupons with Peapod, like in the store, to save even more.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

      Leah

  2. Hi,
I’ve read other sites regarding tipping Peapod drivers. They are all older sites. Since this has comments from 2017, the age-old question that many people ask is how much do you tip your driver? I live one flight up and I tip $5.00 per trip; the tip is cash which I know is appreciated rather than on the credit card. Can you give your thoughts on all of this? Thanks.

    • I, also, tip $5. I add it to my bill when I checkout in case I’m not here when the groceries arrive. I want to ensure the driver gets tipped.

      Leah

    • Yes, I can answer how much to tip peapod driver 2019.

  3. Peapod lost a custiomer this morning. They brought delivery and wanted to leave it outside. Called customer service they told me they offer door to door service. Don’t need to enter house. Bye Bye Peapod.

    • Dave:

I’m so sorry to hear this. I have never had Peapod want to leave my groceries at the door. They always bring them in. I would understand your being disappointed. Was that the first time this ever happened? Normally I would say call customer service but you did just that and got an answer you weren’t expected. That’s too bad.

  4. I realize I sound like a spoiled brat writing this — so please consider these remarks in context — but I don’t know how I ever lived without Peapod! Starting Peapod deliveries is hands down the best home/family management decision I have ever made. The time/gas saved and convenience more than make up for the nominal delivery fees. In addition, I’ve become a fan of their Plated/Blue Apron style boxes, which also help fill in the blanks with meal planning. And as no one has mentioned it so far, I’d also like to add that the Peapod delivery personnel are absolutely top drawer. Not only are the neatly dressed, courteous and friendly, they never fail to go the extra mile and delivery groceries right to my kitchen, and pet supplies to my pantry. It’s like having a grocery concierge service. I couldn’t be more pleased — in case you couldn’t tell! Love, love, love Peapod!

  5. I have been ordering food to be delivered to my elderly mother’s home weekly from Peapod for approximately a year. I must say that there have been no issues with either the orders or the delivery times since I started ordering with them. Deliveries have always been made within the two hour window.
Peapod is a valuable service for the elderly.
My mother has been so happy with the service and products that she has received, so I just started ordering my own groceries through them as well. All the time I save is well worth the $7.95 delivery fee I pay.

    • Hi, Maria:

Thank you for the comment. I’m happy to hear that you are such a pleased customer that you have started using the service yourself. I think that now that you can visit the Peapod website on the day of your order and get that two-hour delivery window makes it much easier to keep track of when your order is going to be delivered.

Also, I noticed that my Peapod (which is through Stop and Shop) is selling meal kits now. I’m going to order and try a few, and then probably write a new blog post about how they compare to other meal kit services.

Thanks again for sharing your experience.

      Leah

  6. This is the most unbelievably horrific service I have ever used. My order was scheduled between 4-10PM. At 9PM I received a call saying the driver is a bit late and my order will be here at around 10:30. It’s now well past MIDNIGHT and I’m sitting here like a dumb*** when I need to wake up for work at 6:30 in the morning!

The best thing? NO follow up call, NO way to contact them because their phone service closes at 10PM and NO way for me to even know if they plan on bringing me what I paid for!

I should have listened to the God-awful Yelp reviews for this company.

Anyone on this page, stay FAR away from Peapod.

I’ve come to the conclusion my order isn’t arriving. I’m going to sleep and calling to ask for a full refund tomorrow.

    What a despicable company.

    • This is indeed awful and I am so sorry this happened to you. I hope you called the next day, complained and insisted they refund your order and then some. Let us know what happens.

      Leah

    • My neighbor has been using PeaPod and loves it. If she had read your comments she might never have
signed on…you need to realize that what happens in your neighborhood or town is not reflective (good
or bad) of what everyone else will experience. People should judge on their own.

    • Hi, MaryAnn: I got an official answer for you. Unfortunately, Peapod said that they do not accept circular coupons and those are to be used in-stores only. They have their own sales and offers that differ from what you may find in-store or mailed to you. They do, however, accept any brand/manufacturer coupons.

Probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but at least now we both know. Thanks again for posting the question.

  7. Dear Peapod,

I waited home yesterday 2/14 for the entire day waiting for my groceries from 12-2pm. I received one text yesterday morning saying they were running late and no text after that! I will request a full refund! I will never use this company any again!!!!!! NEVER!!!! I wasted my entire Valentines Day waiting on groceries which is despicable. A renown company such as yours should have the decency to alert your customers!!!
I called and waited on the phone for 30 mins on hold! Then they said press “1” to leave your number and they would get back to you! Then when I pressed “1” it disconnected and I had to make the call again, waiting 37 mins to get through! The young lady who finally answered said my order would come at 8:30!!!!
NEVER CAME!!! Still NEVER received a follow up text saying what time they would come!!! Not even a phone call! I am so disappointed and will Never use them again!!!
I still don’t know where my food is!!! I will be calling the Regional office today!!!!

    Signed disappointed!!!

    • Did you call 1-800-5-PEAPOD (I found it on the Peapod site)? This is disappointing to hear.
Can you tell me where you live and which store fulfills your orders? I can try to help you figure out what happened.
      Leah

  8. Actually, the food came in boxes, which the delivery person brought to the door on a hand cart. Inside were those plastic bags you don’t want to deal with. However, I would bet that they would pack your stuff in the boxes and leave the bags out if you asked.

Those boxes are reused as he took them and the freezer/cold packs inside them back with him to the truck after unloading.

I hear you on the reusable bag thing. It’s a good question to ask Peapod. Perhaps I should head over to Twitter and see if I can find out.

    Leah

  9. I’ve always been vaguely curious about grocery delivery, but I also realized that there’s really no way for them to use reuseable bags, which is a huge issue for me. Not only do I not want a house full of plastic bags, but I live on the third floor of an apartment building with very steep stairs. I don’t trust those plastic bags to make it through the narrow twists and turns without getting caught on something and exploding.

How did they pack your groceries? Was it one-five items per bags like my store seems to love to do?
