I Tried Stitch Fix Again and Here’s How it Went

Iโ€™ve written a lot about Stitch Fix, the online clothes styling company. I first tried the service 10 years ago โ€” wow, a whole decade ago โ€” after paying for a very expensive personal stylist to take me shopping. This was long before I learned about the free personal shoppers you can use at Nordstrom.

My Experience with Stitch Fix

Over the years Iโ€™ve used Stitch Fix to get my big-and-tall husband menโ€™s clothing and also to invest in new workout attire. Then in 2019 I partnered with Stitch Fix to help me find a dress to wear to my daughter Annieโ€™s undergraduate graduation. Fast forward to this year, and Annie was graduating from her doctoral program and once again, I needed a new dress. Once again, Stitch Fix came to the rescue.

Since 2019 I have used Stitch Fix Freestyle from time-to-time to buy new versions of clothing Iโ€™d previously received in a Fix. I love how you can go into your profile, search for clothing youโ€™ve kept from a Fix or bought on Freestyle and then be able to buy more, if the items were still available. However, last month was the first time in years that Iโ€™d gone through the personal styling service that Stitch Fix offers.

A lot has changed in how Stitch Fix does things and Iโ€™m here to share how that all worked out for me.

Updating my Stitch Fix profile

One of the first things I needed to do was update my Stitch Fix profile. Thatโ€™s because, thanks to menopause, Iโ€™d put on some weight and all of my old sizes in the profile were no longer relevant. Also, my taste in clothing has changed in those six years since Iโ€™d last gotten a Fix. So I needed to update my style profile, now called Style File. According to the โ€œtestโ€ I took, my style is Boho Rebel. OK, sure.

Previewing my Fix

When I first started using Stitch Fix, you couldnโ€™t see what was coming before the box arrived. Now you can use the app or Stitch Fix website to review what the stylist has chosen for you. You can keep or delete their choices, up to eight pieces. This is a big change from 2019. At that time you could get a max of five items at a time. Ironically, of the dresses the stylist chose for me, I ended up selecting only five. But they were the ones that spoke to me.

Three dresses from Stitch Fix.

One of the things that Iโ€™d noted when requesting my Fix was that faux wrap dresses do the best on my body shape. Hereโ€™s what the stylistโ€™s note said to me:

โ€œHey, Leah! What a special occasion you have coming upโ€”congratulations to your daughter on her graduation! Iโ€™m so glad you found several dress options youโ€™re excited to try for the outdoor ceremony. Youโ€™ve picked a beautiful mix, including two fresh new arrivals: the navy Maggy London surplice neck dress and the navy London Times sleeveless maxi. Both offer a timeless, elegant look and should work well for a celebration that calls for comfort and style. The indigo Nine Britton knit midi wrap is another lovely choice, especially since faux wrap styles have been a favorite for you. I appreciate your feedback about halters and cold shoulders, and I made a note to avoid those silhouettes in the future. Let me know how the lengths work for you and which dresses feel the most special for the big day. I canโ€™t wait to hear your thoughts!โ€

Another of the big changes at Stitch Fix: brand names and prices I found affordable. Of the five dresses, I ended up keeping three. One of the brands was Maggy London, which is a brand Iโ€™ve purchased at Nordstrom, Macyโ€™s and Marshalls. And I found the prices completely reasonable for these dresses. The most expensive one was $75. The other two dresses were $69. Similar dresses at the retailers I just mentioned were twice the price.

As you can see from the photo at the top of this article, I ended up wearing the purple London Times Imogen dress for my daughterโ€™s graduation. It was so comfortable and I thought flattering. I canโ€™t wait to have another occasion when I can wear it. The next time we have a summer wedding, Iโ€™m going to wear the London Times blue and white polka dot dress. And the Maggy London dress? Iโ€™ve got it cued up for the next time I have a business meeting. Iโ€™m so happy with the clothing I received and kept.
