What is Tabata Ride on Peloton

When you search for classes on Peloton, you may come across something called a Tabata ride.

What is Tabata?

Well, it’s a kind of interval training that’s not exclusive to Peloton.

In fact, you may have already experienced Tabata at spin classes at the gym, if you ever pushed, pulled back and then pushed again.

Basically, a Tabata class usually has a strict 2 to 1 or 2:1 ratio of work to recovery.

So, if you push for 20 seconds, you rest for 10 seconds.

If you push for 40 seconds, you rest for 20 seconds.

And so on.

What is the benefit of a Tabata ride

Probably the biggest benefit of doing a Tabata ride on Peloton is you get tremendous benefits in a short amount of time.

Here’s what the Cleveland Clinic had to say about 20-minute Tabata workouts:

“Studies have shown that devoting a few minutes to Tabata increases cardio and strength more than devoting far more hours to moderate-intensity workouts. It’s a pretty impressive fat burner, too.”

Length of Tabata rides on Peloton

peloton tabata ride classes

I point out the 20-minute length of Tabata workouts that the Cleveland Clinic mentions for a reason.

That is, when you search Peloton for Tabata, most of the rides you’ll see are 20 minutes.

However, there are few 30 minute rides as well as shorter ones.

In fact, there are 15-minute Tabata rides and 10-minute ones, too.

What is Tabata vs HIIT?

Both Tabata and HIIT are interval classes or workouts.

In fact, HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training.

When it comes to Peloton Tabata vs HIIT classes, here’s what I know.

As I mentioned, Tabata is much more specific in how those intervals are organized–the 2 to 1 ratio of work.

On the other hand, while a HIIT workout may have elements of Tabata in it–a ratio of work to recovery, it is not as specific.

In HIIT classes, intervals and recovery periods can be of varying lengths.

Here’s another difference with HIIT vs. Tabata on Peloton.

All Tabata classes are rides.

However, not all HIIT classes are rides.

In fact, when you search for HIIT on Peloton, you’ll get results that include the following:

  • cardio
  • cycling
  • running

Some of the cardio classes are straight out burpees and the like.

Other of these cardio HIIT classes involve weights.

Even Peloton prenatal program has Tabata

Of the cycling classes in Robin’s Prenatal and Postnatal Class Series, all of them are prenatal cycling classes.

They are all 20 minutes long.

And don’t think you’re getting off easy, just because they’re labeled prenatal.

Some of the classes are HIIT–high intensity interval training.

FYI, to find prenatal and postpartum HIIT classes, you’ll need to look in Peloton Collections.

Unfortunately, Collections are not searchable.

So, you’ll have to scroll until you get to Robin’s Prenatal and Postnatal class series.

There, you’ll find these five HIIT cycling classes among some of her strength training classes.

They are all 20-minute HIIT rides.

You may notice that there is a second postpartum collection called Strong as a Mother.

These do not include these HIIT cycling classes.

Accessories for Tabata

You’re going to get sweaty doing Tabata rides for sure.

Therefore, you might want a fan that mounts on your bike.

Use code LEAHINGRAM to save 15%.

Also, you’ll want sweat towels.

Here are some of my favorites.

Velotowel

The folks at Velotowel have also created a product to help you walk in your cycling shoes.

Gus Grip Handlebar towel

The Gus Grip handlebar towel literally wraps around your Peloton handlebars, and I think it’s great.

One, it allows me to keep my hands on the bars without the towel slipping.

Two, it’s absorbent.

And, three, it stretches to fit handlebars on the original Peloton bike as well as the Bike Plus.

Best of all, if you use coupon code LEAH10, you’ll save 10%.

Finally, if you’re looking to support a women-owned business or brand, Gus Grip fits the bill.
